Siemens raised $130,000 for President’s Challenge 2006

Singapore , Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Siemens organized the Siemens - President's Challenge Charity Golf 2006 yesterday to raise funds for the President's Challenge 2006. Some 130 golfers participated in the event at the New Course of the Singapore Island Country Club. The company raised a total of $130,000 for the President's Challenge through the golf event and several company-wide activities.

President S R Nathan, the guest of honor for the event, said in his message: "Increasingly a growing number of companies want to do more than just business in the community where they operate. Recognizing that they are a part of the community they operate in, and realizing that a healthy community ultimately begets a healthy bottomline, these companies are also channeling efforts towards community projects.

"I hope more companies will follow the example set by Siemens and join their ranks in making such contributions to society."

This is the fourth year that Siemens is participating in the President's Challenge and the second that a charity golf event is organized to raise funds. Siemens hopes to achieve the two-pronged objectives of the Challenge to give and care for the less fortunate.

"Corporate Citizenship is an integral part of our operations and we believe in striking the right balance between business interest and community involvement for sustainable growth. Our involvement in the President's Challenge has also set the stage for us to involve our colleagues in giving and caring for the needy," said Hans-Dieter Bott, Managing Director of Siemens Pte Ltd.

A Double Peoria format of play was adopted for the golf event where golfers play their normal golf and record the gross score for each hole. Six blind holes: one par 3, one par 4 and one par 5 from each nine are selected. The scoring system excludes these six selected holes and uses the remaining 12 holes to compute the golfer's handicap using a fixed formula. The system then uses the computed handicap to compute the golfer's nett for all 18 holes and the winner is the player with the best nett, using the standard count back. Best gross for the Siemens event was 78 and the winner for the best gross also netted the prize for nearest to pin at 120 centimeters from the pin.
